Some of the Music I've Enjoyed and Appreciated Recently

πŸ’₯ I am currently sorting through and backing up (again) my music HDs with LOTS of music, both albums and singles!

πŸ’₯ The Beatles (of course!) My playlist for them is 32 hours worth; sourced from official and unofficial releases, bootlegs, live, radio etc etc.

πŸ’₯ I listen to a lot of brand-new Aussie music courtesy of Amrap, which is connected with my previous Radio Presenting days until now.

I've personally got 286+ hours' worth (that's almost TWELVE Days of continuous playing) of contemporary Aussie music on one playlist alone to enjoy as it is. Niiiice.
Of course, I don't select all their new music, just the stuff I enjoy.

πŸ’₯ Raphael Saadiq - The Way I See It (2008) - great Motown/Soul-inspired music.
        4 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

πŸ’₯ I've rediscovered an English online radio station that plays album music from the 60's-80's... right up my street [grins].

πŸ’₯ Aussie 70's classic Richard Clapton's three albums (remastered in 2024):
    - Goodbye Tiger (1977)
    - Great Escape (1982)
    - Prussian Blue (1973)

πŸ’₯ The Red Button is sublime 60s-inspired pop. I love their juicy melodic harmonies, jangly electric 12-strings and fun loopy basslines - all feels so uplifting and positive. Instant mood lifter. I have all their albums, even an unplugged one, saved as a playlist. Check 'em out.

πŸ’₯ I'm loving Shakti's blend of Indian-Jazz Fusion on the five albums I have of theirs.

πŸ’₯ Sherbet - "On With the Show" (1973): their second album, and a huge happy memory from my childhood. In Australia's mid-70s youth culture, it was "Sherbet Vs Skyhooks" - and I went with Sherbet [grins]. I really enjoyed their pop sensibilities and great songwriting - still do... their glam/glitter look was horrid, let's admit it (Oh... then there's some unforgivable shmaltz/horrors in there as well!). This album, tho, highlights a lot of their earlier prog-rock elements well. Oh... yes, I have all their albums as well... "I am not ashamed"! [laffs]

πŸ’₯ I've enjoyed Eric Clapton's 1974 laid-back album "461 Ocean Boulevard". Hey, I turn 60-yo this year... 'laid back' is fine by me [laffs].
A bit more Clapton has appeared on my speakers this week (mid-January 2024), with his 1977 album "Slowhand", along with his iconic 1992 "Unplugged" album. Nice mellow grooves.

πŸ’₯ Then there's been a bit of early teenage nostalgia for me, with three ELO albums: A New World Record (1976), Out of the Blue (1977) and Discovery (1979). I love their shimmery layered production, plus there are some damn good songs in there as well.

πŸ’₯ Pugwash
Seriously, do yourself a favour and listen to anything by Pugwash - one of my all-time favs!
"What amazes me is how they manage to sound like Beck, The Beach Boys, The Stone Roses and Elo at different times - remarkable" - @thecolin1
    From me: 5 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

πŸ’₯ The Rolling Stones "Hackney Diamonds" (2023); yes, after SIXTY YEARS, a new album. A good Stones album, up to speed.
    From me: 3 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐

πŸ’₯ Diesel "Bootleg Melancholy" (2023) (Australian)
    From me: 3.5 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐ +

πŸ’₯ Russell Morris, "The Real Thing: Symphonic Concert" (2023) (Australian)
A classic Aussie songwriter beautifully performed and recorded.
    From me: 3.5 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐ +

πŸ’₯ YES!!! Nice smooth mellow background burble during a lot of my day.

πŸ’₯  "-" ('Subtract') is the new 2023 album from Ed Sheeran. I'm enjoying the nice mellow melodic light pop vibe a lot. Recommended.

πŸ’₯ I'm enjoying my playlist of 45 hours worth of assorted 1960s pop music - my favourite decade for music.

πŸ’₯ "Yes is the Answer!" by Geoffrey Williams (2012). I received a copy of this when I was presenting radio at the time; breathtaking music! Gorgeous smooth mellow melodic soul/pop, like a lost early 70's Stevie Wonder album. 5 out of 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

πŸ’₯ DΓ©jΓ  Vu (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album from 1970) - classic class.

πŸ’₯ Crowded House... what can I say? They are awesome! 6-hours-plus-worth of music on my playlist as it is! And yes, all different versions of the band, too [grins]. One of my all-time favs.

πŸ’₯ If you have never heard the Finn Brothers' 2004 album, "Everyone Is Here": do yourself a favour! Seriously: Five out of Five!

πŸ’₯ Michael Jackson's 1991 album "Dangerous" is a 5/5 for me already - an old fav of mine; the three cloyingly puerile ballads don't detract overall from the amazing quality of the new jack swing... I can even get past all his vocal 'hiccups' & inflictions etc.

πŸ’₯ Lana Del Ray - something totally different for me [yet again...]; as always I've had all her albums on my music HD's, but just thought now to have a listen. It's nice mellow dream pop, which I like .

πŸ’₯  Jamiroquai - (March 2023): thanks to @briegerobinson for nudging me to listen to this good fun funk/acid jazz music, which I had sitting on my music HD's but just not listened to it... that has been rectified promptly and successfully. These guys perfectly channel 70's Stevie Wonder (with a bit of Sly/Family Stone) - I love it! ✅

πŸ’₯ Gogo Penguin "A Humdrum Star" (2018) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

πŸ’₯ Goldfrapp "Seventh Tree" (2008) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐✅

MS Anniversary

My MS Symptoms started on 4 November 2016... seven years ago.

πŸ’₯ My MS Diagnosis Anniversary is on 23 January 2017 - seven years for me. πŸ’₯

Crikies... what an 'interesting' journey for me so far... [nb. that loaded word 'interesting! lol].

(Feb 2022)
Funny [haha] dream last night... while I'm not a fan of David Bowie (altho I greatly appreciate his artistic forms), in my dream I was teaching a band how to play the song "Ziggy Stardust"... but in reality, I haven't listened to or even played that song in like 25+ years. The bizarre thing is... in the dream I knew all the chord changes and licks and inversions and arrangements etc. Upon relistening to the actual track the next day - I was bloody right! I laffed. Silly brain. (I was always the guy in every band/group that remembered all the arrangements, back when... silly subconsciousness).

Loving my new air-fryer as well. 🍳

A Dream

Mal's Blog Post

What a cool dream I had...

While I can't play guitar much anymore, I woke up happily smiling at this one.

I was playing an old Fender guitar (which I didn't usually play) in a small guitar/music shop locally somewhere, jamming old blues tunes with some people, just hanging out.

In walked Keith Richards and Mick Jagger (but acting like normal random people), and they were immediately drawn to the grooves.

They suggested they'd like to play along, so (for some reason... you know how dreams don't often make sense! lol), we secluded ourselves in the small guitar technician's workshop out the back, just the three of us, behind a closed door.

It was just three old guys enjoying the groove of playing old blues music together, nothing starstruck etc at all. They were really friendly and sincere, just having fun.

There was one moment when the three of us smiled knowingly at each other, just appreciating the moment of playing these old blues grooves together privately. Keith shot me a smile and laughed. No 'show', expectations, performance, ego, cameras, videos, recording. Just three anonymous people playing in the moment, in that small compact environment.

There was nothing magically amazing playing or anything like that. I was blown away at how sincere, happy and encouraging they were, with just an average random Joe.

After about ten minutes there was a knock at the door, and one of their 'handlers' told them they had to leave.

As they got up to go, Mick said, "That was really cool... I haven't felt that good playing that stuff in years". Keith smiled in agreement. "Yeah, oh shit yeah."
"Do you miss it?", I said, "playing like this, just privately?"
"Oh yeah... catch-22 being who we are... we just can't turn up unannounced somewhere and just play like this, because people would go nuts and all that shit. But thanks so much... I think we both needed this."

After they'd left, what had just happened kinda hit me, and I floundered about for a few minutes trying to pack my guitar and gear away clumsily.

The music/guitar shop owner said it was getting late and he had to close up... the local security guy told us it was time to go because he needed to lock everything up.

People kept coming up to me as I was trying to pack up and ask me what it was like, and all I could honestly say was that "it was good relaxing and fun", simply because: it was!

Nice dream, as I can't play now. I woke up smiling, and happy... knowing I can still play in my subconscious.

PS. I was never a great player, just a competent hack, basically. lol.
