The Beatles: Get Back

Sunday 28th November 2021

52 years later...

As a total Beatleholic, I do not have the words to describe how good this is! I've just watched ALL of it, and it's both funny, bittersweet and tragic.

Three weeks in the life of... January 1969...

That they could put out their "Abbey Road" album just eight months *after* this situation (that first week was truly nightmarish!), just shows that when they wanted to do it (ie. make 'Beatle music'), they could! (NB. Abbey Road is possibly my personal No. 1 favourite album of all time).

I make no excuses for watching all 3 episodes - 7 hours 48 mins  (468 minutes) - straight today - my first time! A memorable Sunday. It's GOOD! I applaud all who are behind this film and recreation of what it was really like. Straight onto my 5/5 list.

What were some of those favourite moments from "The Beatles: Get Back"?

How they realised something really 'died' when Brian died (in 1967).
"How important really was Brian Epstein" - @juanfranciscomo

Then the shot when the other three hear Paul play 'Let It Be' for the very first time is classic... like, you can see it on their faces, "Fuck! That's *good*!"... but they all still try to act cool all the same [laffs].

The huge empty barn of Twickenham Studios, where they were attempting to rehearse, was NOT conducive to music-making (plus, being mid-Winter, it was bloody cold!)... and it's plain to see. Poor bastards.

"Everybody's got a hard-on" - John, "I've Got a Feeling".

"Feeling George's growing frustration, even saying he wanted to do an album of his own to just get his songs out there" - @alayne_rigney
I mean, he actually left the band during the first week!
"See you 'round the clubs..." - George.

The saddest moment when Paul said, "and then there were two", and he looks lost and like he's realizing the end is near for the band - @HDNTribute

"Paul holding back tears" - @rambardy

"When John, Paul and Ringo hugged each other after George left" - @shaberryfields

The Indian home-movie footage. "Paul telling about the film of them in Rishikesh and explaining the opening shot" - @darksweetgeo

The most surprising moment - the hidden mic on Paul and John during a lunch break.

"If I were to take away a quote from The Beatles: Get Back, it would be Ringos' “I farted” - @elisedotkom

Paul had been struggling to find an 'ending' to the whole concept - a live performance. Everyone to Michael Lindsay-Hogg (original director): “Stop trying to make (a concert in) Libya happen! It’s not going to happen!”

Thus the look on Paul's face, when it is suggested they play their 'concert' on the roof! "Oh... YEAAAAH!"
"His face lit up at the suggestion. It was so lovely to see that" - @helteryskeltery

Then there is Pauls' stepdaughter (Heather, aged c.5-yo)'s reaction to watching and hearing Yoko's 'vocalizations'... a true classic "Urgh!!" moment. lol
"Especially loved how when Linda's daughter came to the studio because she had heard Yoko wailing and screeching she decided to have a go" - @beccap2007

"When John was playing with Heather asking if she was going to eat her cat... " - @JamesStopher

"Paul creating Get Back from scratch, while Ringo and George yawned" - @linsey_biggans

With George enticed back into the group, the move from the negative environment into their own (incomplete) basement Studio at Apple, in Saville Row, right in the middle of London, was the best thing for them!

Then when Billy Preston joins on keyboards (by random chance)... everything changes 1,000% for the better - performance & attitude. They get their shit together, basically. I'd heard that was so, but to see and hear it... musically and attitudinally, is staggeringly cool. (100% Beatle nerd speaking. lol).
"Billy Preston (is) the gravy, the sauce, the topping & the dessert to this entire recording session" - @lauraleefulmer

"The ever-present tea and marmalade on toast" (in the studio) - @jashapurna

"The part where all the Beatles had left and the crew jumped on their instruments was hilarious" - @CLTramps

And I loved the whole rooftop sequence... and the crowd gathered below and peoples' reactions - Historical moment! Plus being mid-winter, in that breeze... how cold must it have been to play! Good on 'em!

"I just looked it up. The weather was windy and 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-7c!!!) on 1/30/1969 in London" - @WesMoodyKC

"When Paul saw the policemen (on the rooftop behind them) and screams 'WOO!' in the middle of 'Don't Let Me Down'... I love Mal Evans when he just plays the hammer and the anvil (on 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer'). It's such a joy seeing him like a kid surrounded by The Beatles itself" - @indrisme

"Mal Evans stalling the Police; telling them that he had turned off the PAs and there was one in the basement" - @nickdavey12

"I loved watching Maureen Starkey rock out to the rooftop performance" - @MarthaDeLeon9

"After the rooftop performance, when all four huddled together in the control room (along with Billy P. and their 'significant others') to listen to the tape playback of what they had just performed. Just a perfect 'band moment' " - @Coooooorb
"They pulled it off and they know it" - @carolannelennie

As they said themselves quite a few times, when their backs were to the wall, they could still "Do It" - ie. create Beatle music.

"If only John & George can see this, along with Linda, Maureen, Billy, Mal & G. Martin" - @Caren329

"I really wasn't sure what to expect, but this work from Peter Jackson and his team is just mind-blowing. I enjoy every single second... this need to have an Oscar award" - @JustInterested8

A GREAT 5/5 Documentary from me. We Beatleholics have waited a LONG time for this - PEACE AND LOVE!

I do believe they passed the audition.
