Autoimmune Disease a disease in which the bodys' immune system mistakenly recognizes its own healthy cells and tissues as foreign, and attacks them (rather than defending!).
The immune system is the body’s defence mechanism against germs, viruses and other unwanted nasties. But, when it malfunctions, autoimmune disease is the inevitable outcome. The immune system is a very powerful defence, so when it goes on the attack, as an autoimmune disease, it can be a formidable adversary.
